[Mental and physical development of 12-year-old children with retardation of intellectual development].
The aim of this study was to examine the intellectual, social, emotional and motor development of twelve year old children with retardation of intellectual development as defined by the ICD-10. Fifty seven children with a mild retardation (the IQS of 70 and 75) were assessed. Their mean IQ was 64.3 (range 54-79). There were 26 boys and 31 girls. Two to five children with the same diagnosis were examined from one to four times a year for a period of one to three years. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children was administered to all children. The data was compared to a group of 25 children without retardation and to the Dutch population norms. The girls showed lower IQ scores than boys. The regression analysis showed that the length of time since the diagnosis had a significant effect on the IQ and some subscales, but not on the social skills. The scores of the social competence and the peer interaction skills were lower than in a group of 25 children without retardation. The motor skills were above average. All subjects were able to manage the more difficult subtasks of the test. The difference in the motor skills between the group with retardation and the reference group was significant. Children with retardation of intellectual development had lower IQ scores than children with normal intelligence. The reason for this can be explained by the fact that girls were underrepresented among children with retardation of intellectual development. The lack of social competence and the poor motor skills of children with retardation of intellectual development are disturbing, and these skills should be an important part of treatment programs.Bullous skin disease in childhood.
